●We dig into the secret behind the irresistible shio-pan at "Amakusa Shio-Pan Labo," nestled on Maeshima Island in Amakusa, Kumamoto.
Amakusa is a place where large and small islands stretch across a calm, blue sea. Every bridge you cross on a drive there opens up a new vista, and the sense of being on a real getaway keeps building.
In such a wide-open setting, what you really want is a flavor that could only exist here — one born from the bounty of the land.
The shop I visited this time is a buzzed-about shio-pan (salt bread) specialty bakery that uses natural salt harvested from the waters of Amakusa and is committed to serving everything fresh out of the oven.

About an hour and a half by car from downtown Kumamoto City, the shop sits on Maeshima, a small island in the Amakusa archipelago.
Just across one of the bridges linking the Amakusa islands — the No. 3 Bridge — stands Risola Terrace, a mixed-use resort complex. The terrace overlooking the sea offers a breathtaking view of the blue water and the green of the surrounding islands; you can't help but be completely captivated.

Housed within that Risola Terrace complex is "Amakusa Shio-Pan Labo," a bakery shop filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread and butter.
