Sells Out by Early Afternoon! The "Sake Brewery Anpan" You Have to Try in Hita City, Oita — A Town Steeped in Edo-Era History

Hita City in Oita Prefecture sits at the heart of northern Kyushu. Once a post town under direct Edo shogunate rule as a "tenryō" (shogunate-controlled territory), it flourished as the most prosperous town in all of Kyushu. The central Mameda-machi district still retains its charming machiya townhouses and long-established inns, and every spring the area is well known for hosting the "Tenryō Hita Ohina Matsuri," a doll festival where elaborately crafted hina dolls passed down through generations of old local families are displayed throughout the neighborhood.

When you're exploring this historic town and feel like taking a breather, the must-try treat is the "Ginjō Anpan" (¥230) — a signature sake-scented bun from Kuncho Shuzo brewery.

Standing out prominently along the Kagetsu River that flows through the northern part of town, Kuncho Shuzo operates a café and bakery called Hakkōya KOGURA directly across from the brewery. This is where the famous bun is sold.
