【Local Bread Obsession】That Chewy, Pillowy Texture Is Absolutely Incredible! mugi bagel — A New Bagel-Specialty Café That Just Opened in Meguro,Tokyo

● Every neighborhood has its beloved bakery — some cherished for generations, others exciting us with fresh flavors and new discoveries. Our Oishii Local Club rounds up the standout "local breads" worth seeking out. This time, we're spotlighting a bagel-specialty café in Meguro.

Drift around a Meguro street corner and you might catch a warm waft of wheat in the air. Step inside, and you'll be greeted by a bagel with a one-of-a-kind texture — chewy, springy, and utterly satisfying. That's mugi bagel, a bagel-specialty café in Meguro, Tokyo.

Its flavor wins over bread lovers and bagel devotees alike, making it the kind of place that gets your heart racing whether you're after a morning breakfast or a lunch companion. From the very first bite, a wave of happiness washes over you — let us tell you all about it.

◾️More Than 20 Unique, Must-Try Bagels — Including a Salt Butter Bagel

▲Over 20 varieties of bagels are available, including creative spins on popular breads like the "Melon Bagel."

mugi bagel opened on August 17, 2025, just a 3-minute walk from Meguro Station along Gonnosuke-zaka slope. The warm, wood-accented interior offers table seating for eat-in customers as well as a pleasant terrace, giving you a relaxed space to enjoy freshly baked bagels at your own pace. Takeout is available too, so it's a perfect stop on a leisurely stroll or on your way home from work.

The biggest draw at mugi bagel is, without question, that signature "mugyu-mochi" texture. The crust has a satisfying chew and resistance, while the interior strikes a perfect balance between springiness and soft, mochi-like give. With every bite, a rich wheat aroma blooms — both the texture and the fragrance are genuinely moving.

◾️The One You Have to Try: The Salt Butter Bagel

At any given time, more than 20 varieties line the counter. The selection rotates daily, so what you find depends on when you visit — and that element of discovery is part of the fun.

On this visit, I tried three standout bagels. First up and absolutely unmissable: the Salt Butter Bagel. Warm it up and Hokkaido butter melts right into the crumb, while Guérande salt from France cuts through with a sharp, clean edge. Simple as it sounds, it leaves a lingering aftertaste you just can't forget.

The "Potéchi" (Potato Chip) bagel wraps fluffy Hokkaido potato and savory smoked bacon inside, topped with gooey melted cheddar cheese. The moment you bite in, toasty warmth, saltiness, and the natural sweetness of potato layer together in a way that makes you smile without even trying.

"Sesame & Pumpkin" is a gently sweet pumpkin dough loaded with plenty of black sesame kneaded right in. With each chew, the rich depth of sesame and a natural sweetness unfold — it's the kind of flavor that quietly soothes you.

Every bagel is baked fresh in-house each day, and each one has its own slightly unique look — which makes them all the more endearing. Sink your teeth into one straight from the oven and you simply cannot help but grin.

▲Bagel sandwiches filled with ham, salmon, Camembert, and more are also hugely popular.

Morning hours starting at 9:00 a.m. feature the beloved Salt Butter Bagel bundled with a drink, and there are great-value lunch options as well. The official Instagram account also posts seasonal limited and monthly specials, so it's worth checking before you head over. The calm, cozy atmosphere inside is perfect for a solo outing, too.

mugi bagel is the place to fully experience the magic of that chewy, pillowy texture. It's a proudly local bread find in Meguro — come taste it for yourself and let your five senses do the rest. That one bite just might make your everyday life a little richer.
